| Beschrijving voorzijde | Facing crowned bust of John II, Count of Hainaut, set within a beaded inner circle. The effigy is rendered in the schematic Gothic style characteristic of late 13th-century Low Countries sterlings, with the head depicted frontally, flanking hair locks falling to the shoulders as stylized twin curls, and a floral or rosette crown with individual petals visible along its upper edge. The portrait is bold and formulaic, closely related to comparable Flemish and Brabantine sterlings of the period. The outer legend in Gothic majuscules, separated from the central type by the beaded circle, occupies the surrounding field. |
