Milutin's reign coincided with Serbia's aggressive territorial expansion into Byzantine Macedonia, and his coinage program was in part a deliberate assertion of parity with Byzantine monetary standards. The grosso-type silver issues of this period drew directly on Venetian and Byzantine models circulating in the Adriatic and Balkan trade networks, giving Serbian coinage an immediately recognizable commercial credibility across regional markets.
