Thourioi was a Panhellenic colony founded in 444/3 BC on the site of destroyed Sybaris, with Herodotus among its early settlers according to ancient tradition. By the late fourth century, the city faced mounting pressure from Lucanian tribes pushing down from the interior — a threat that eventually forced Thourioi to request Roman military assistance in 282 BC, a diplomatic overture that helped trigger the Pyrrhic War.
