| Obverse description | Diademed and draped bust of Bosporan king Sauromates II facing right, rendered in the Hellenistic tradition with finely striated hair swept back beneath the diadem. The effigy is depicted with individualized facial features including a prominent nose and defined chin, with drapery visible at the truncation. The circumferential Greek legend ΒΑCΙΛΕΩC CΑΥΡΟΜΑΤΟΥ (of King Sauromates) runs around the periphery, enclosed within a beaded border. The style reflects the hybrid Greco-Barbarian artistic tradition characteristic of Bosporan royal coinage of the late second century AD. |
