Pharnakes II — son of Mithridates VI — briefly reclaimed Pontus and the Bosporan Kingdom from Rome after his victory at Nicopolis in 48 BC, prompting Caesar's famously dismissive "veni, vidi, vici" after crushing him at Zela the following year. This stater predates that ill-fated campaign, struck when Pharnakes held the Bosporan throne with reasonable security, having surrendered it to Rome and then exploited the chaos of the Roman civil war to retake his inheritance.
