Miltiades II governed the Thracian Chersonesos as a tyrant under Achaemenid suzerainty before fleeing Persian forces around 493 BC — the same man who would later command the Athenian forces at Marathon in 490 BC. Coinage struck under his authority in the Chersonesos represents one of the few instances where a named Athenian military figure can be directly associated with a specific issuing authority outside Attica.
