| Beschrijving voorzijde | Confronted foreparts of a lion and a bull facing one another in heraldic opposition, both animals rendered in fine relief with naturalistic anatomical detail. The lion, depicted on the left, displays an open roaring mouth with visible teeth, a mane rendered in stylized overlapping scales or ridged tufts, and a powerful muscular chest. The bull, on the right, faces left with a lowered head and similarly detailed musculature. The two animals meet at center, occupying the full width of the roughly oval flan with no inscriptions or border. The composition is characteristic of the royal Lydian coinage attributed to the reign of Kroisos, representing one of the earliest and most artistically accomplished struck gold coinages of the ancient world. |
