Struck at Amphipolis, the most prolific mint of Alexander's gold coinage, this stater falls within the period bracketing Alexander's death in 323 BC — meaning it may have been struck under his authority or immediately afterward under Antipater's regency. The distinction matters to collectors and historians alike, since posthumous issues continued using Alexander's types for decades, but Price 177 places this emission early enough to sit close to the boundary.
Amphipolis controlled access to the Pangaion silver and gold mines, which is precisely why Philip II seized it in 357 BC. That resource base funded the entire Macedonian military expansion that followed.
