Struck at Abydos — the strategically vital city controlling the narrowest crossing of the Hellespont — this issue dates to the years of the Diadochi wars following Alexander's death in 323 BC. By 301 BC, the region had passed through the hands of multiple successors; Abydos itself changed control repeatedly as Antigonus Monophas and Lysimachus fought over Thrace and the straits. Coins continued to be struck in Alexander's name long after his death because the type carried commercial authority across the eastern Mediterranean that no successor's portrait yet commanded.
Price 1572 is attributable to this mint partly through die linkage studies. The Abydos output from this period is modest in volume.
