| Beschrijving voorzijde | Helmeted head of Athena facing right, wearing a Corinthian helmet adorned with a coiled serpent on the bowl and a decorative crest. The goddess's facial features are rendered in fine Hellenistic style, with delicate modeling of the cheek, nose, and chin. Wavy locks of hair escape from beneath the helmet and fall along the neck. A small earring is visible below the helmet rim. The field to the right is plain, typical of the Alexandrine stater type. |

| Beschrijving keerzijde | Nike, the winged goddess of Victory, depicted standing facing left in flowing drapery with large spread wings rising behind her. She holds a wreath extended in her right hand and a stylis (naval standard) in her left, the latter being a distinctive feature of the Abydos mint. Two small symbols — identifiable as mint control marks — appear in the lower field to left and right. The Greek legend ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ runs vertically along the right field, identifying the issue as being in the name of Alexander. |

Abydos, positioned at the narrowest crossing of the Hellespont, was one of several cities that continued striking Alexander-type coinage well after the king's death in 323 BC — part of the sprawling posthumous series issued by successor dynasts and autonomous cities alike who found the Alexander type commercially trusted across the eastern Mediterranean. This particular issue falls within the period of the Diadochi wars, when control of the Hellespont was actively contested. Lysimachus, who eventually dominated Thrace and the straits, likely oversaw or at minimum tolerated this mint's output.
Price 1553 is a recognized variety within the Abydos posthumous sequence.
