Struck at Abydos — a mint city controlling the Hellespont crossing — these posthumous Alexander staters were produced under the authority of Lysimachus following the death of Antigonus I at Ipsus in 301 BC. Ipsus reshuffled the entire Macedonian successor world, and Lysimachus, now master of Thrace and much of Asia Minor, continued issuing coin under Alexander's name rather than his own, extracting the political legitimacy that the conqueror's image still commanded.
Price 1571 is distinguished by its specific monogram pairing, placing it firmly within the Abydene sequence rather than the broader Hellespontine issues sometimes conflated with it.
