Kition, the Phoenician city-kingdom on Cyprus's southern coast, was among the eastern mints authorized to strike gold coinage under Alexander's name following his conquest of the Persian empire. These peripheral issues were produced to pay troops and facilitate the enormous logistical demands of the ongoing campaigns, not for prestige. The Kition mint operated for a narrow window, and output was modest — Price catalogued only a handful of dies for this type, making survivors genuinely scarce against the vast Macedonian gold series as a whole.
