Dubnovellaunos ruled jointly over the Trinovantes and Catuvellauni during a period when Julius Caesar's two expeditions into Britain — 55 and 54 BC — had already forced the region into Rome's political orbit, though formal conquest was still nearly a century away. These early staters predate his later issues struck at Camulodunum, suggesting his authority was established before that oppidum became the dominant mint center in southeastern Britain.
The ABC 2389 classification places this among the earliest attributable issues to his name, distinguished from later Dubnovellaunos types by subtle die characteristics documented by Van Arsdell.
