The Amphictyonic League controlled Delphi and its sanctuary revenues, and these staters were struck during a politically volatile window — the period immediately following Philip II of Macedon's intervention in the Fourth Sacred War, which ended in 346 BC and left Macedon as the dominant power arbitrating Greek religious affairs. By 336–334 BC, Philip was dead and Alexander had inherited both the throne and the League's complicated politics. That the League continued striking its own silver through this transition speaks to the sanctuary's residual financial independence, however nominal.
