Aspendos, a prosperous Pamphylian city controlling the Eurymedon River trade route, issued these staters almost entirely for mercenary payments rather than everyday commerce. The city supplied soldiers extensively to Persian satraps and later Hellenistic commanders throughout the fourth century, and the high silver standard of Aspendian coinage was specifically calibrated to meet mercenary pay scales acceptable across the eastern Mediterranean.

The "var." notations against the SNG France and von Aulock references indicate a die combination not precisely matched in either corpus — not unusual given the considerable number of obverse and reverse die pairings documented for this extended issue.
