The 87th Olympiad fell in 432 BC, the same year construction was completed on the Temple of Zeus at Olympia — the very sanctuary under whose authority these staters were issued. The cult of Zeus administered the games and controlled the mint, making this coinage inseparable from the religious infrastructure of the sanctuary rather than any civic or political entity.
