Ouranopolis — "City of Heaven" — was a short-lived settlement on the Athos peninsula founded by Alexarchos, brother of Cassander of Macedon, sometime around 316 BC. Alexarchos was by ancient accounts an eccentric, reportedly inventing his own language and styling himself a solar deity. The city's coinage reflects this grandiosity directly, making it one of the stranger issuing authorities to emerge from the post-Alexander fragmentation of Macedonia.
The settlement likely did not survive past the early third century, which constrains the entire known coinage to a remarkably narrow window of production.
