| Описание аверса | Apple or quince shown in high relief facing, with a short stem and calyx visible at the top, the fruit rendered in a naturalistic style with two lobes flanking a central ridge. The design fills the flan and is rendered in bold, sculptural relief characteristic of Cycladic coinage of the late 5th century BC. The field is plain and unlettered. The irregular flan edges are typical of hand-struck Greek silver coinage of this period. |

Melos maintained its independence and its mint through the early decades of the Peloponnesian War, continuing to strike silver during a period when most smaller Cycladic islands had ceased autonomous coinage entirely. That independence ended definitively in 416 BC when Athens, frustrated by Melian neutrality, besieged and captured the island — executing the adult male population and enslaving the women and children. The episode is preserved in Thucydides' Melian Dialogue, one of the most coldly analytical accounts of imperial power in ancient literature.
This stater dates to precisely that terminal window. The mint did not resume.
