Obverse description Helmeted head of Athena facing right, wearing a Corinthian helmet pushed back on the head, with a large bowl-shaped skull piece. Curling locks of hair emerge beneath the helmet at the nape of the neck, and a round earring is visible at the ear. The portrait is rendered in fine archaic-to-classical Greek style, with strong facial modelling and a serene profile. The field is plain, with no legend or inscription on this side.

Reverse description Pegasus, the winged horse, depicted in full flight to the left across the field, with wings dramatically spread upward and all four legs extended in a flying gallop. The musculature and feathering of the wings are rendered with considerable sculptural detail. Below the horse, a koppa symbol (Ϙ) appears in the lower left field, serving as a mint control mark. The ethnic legend ΙΠΠΩΝΙΩΝ is inscribed along the lower portion of the field, identifying the issuing city of Hipponion in Bruttium.
