背面描述 Nude male warrior, identified as Alalkomenes or a heroic figure, striding vigorously to the right in a dynamic pose, right arm raised and extended brandishing a spear, left arm outstretched for balance. The figure is rendered with accomplished anatomical detail typical of early Classical Greek die-cutting. The ethnic legend ΑΛΙΑΡΤΙΩΝ is inscribed around the figure in the field, distributed on either side, identifying the issuing city of Haliartos in Boeotia.

附加信息

Haliartos was a small Boeotian city whose independent coinage was effectively terminated when Lysander razed the town in 395 BC during the opening campaigns of the Corinthian War. Issues struck before that destruction are the only ones the mint ever produced, which places every surviving Haliartan stater within a window of perhaps two decades at most.

BCD 164 is among the more precisely documented of these pieces, catalogued through the landmark BCD Boiotia collection sale — the single most important reference assemblage for federal and civic Boeotian coinage ever brought to auction.
