Gortyna was one of the dominant poleis of central Crete, and its coinage from this period reflects the city's independence during a stretch when much of the Greek world was being reorganized under Macedonian pressure. Unlike many Aegean mints that shifted output or iconography in response to Alexander's campaigns, Gortyna maintained its own striking traditions without interruption through the late fourth and into the early third century.

Svoronos's classification of this type remains the standard reference, though die studies have since identified a broader spread of obverse dies than his original grouping suggested.
