| Popis rubu | A square incuse punch of standard Archaic type, divided into four recessed quadrants by a raised cross, creating the characteristic windmill or skew pattern. The incuse square is deeply struck and well-centred within the irregular flan, with each quadrant exhibiting a slightly recessed, granular surface. No legend or subsidiary device is present; the design is entirely geometric, consistent with early Archaic coinage convention. |

Naxos was the largest and wealthiest of the Cycladic islands during the Archaic period, its prosperity built on marble quarrying and a dominant position in Aegean trade. That wealth ended abruptly in 490 BC when the Persian fleet under Datis razed the city and enslaved its population — a punitive expedition that preceded Marathon by weeks. Coins struck before that destruction and those after represent two very different economic realities on the same island.
The HGC listing as a variety suggests this piece diverges from the principal die sequence, likely in the incuse punch configuration on the reverse.
