| Description du revers | The hero Ajax strides vigorously to the right, depicted nude save for a crested Corinthian helmet, embodying the martial ideal of the Opuntian Lokrians who venerated him as a local hero. In his right hand he brandishes a short sword, while his left arm bears a large round shield whose interior is elaborately decorated with a griffin running right and a palmette, demonstrating the high quality of die engraving characteristic of this series. Below the figure, a bunch of grapes is depicted, and a broken spear lies on the ground line, alluding to the hero's tragic fate. The ethnic legend ΟΠΟΝΤΙΩΝ appears in the field, identifying the issuing community of Opuntian Lokris. |
