Above the galley appears the Phoenician inscription denoting the civic authority of Arados. The entire design is contained within a dotted border forming a square, which is itself set within a recessed incuse square — a distinctive feature of early Phoenician silver coinage. The composition reflects the maritime identity and naval power of the Phoenician city of Arados.
