| Beschrijving keerzijde | Facing Gorgoneion (Gorgon mask) depicted in bold relief at center, occupying most of the flan. The apotropaic visage displays the characteristic features of the archaic Gorgo type: wide-open staring eyes, a broad flat nose, a wide gaping mouth with protruding tongue and prominent teeth, and flanking serpentine coils of hair or snakes curling outward to either side. The head is framed by a wreath or foliate crown at the top. The rendering is vigorous and expressive, executed in the late archaic to early classical style. |
