| Obverse description | An apple depicted in high relief at center, rendered in a stylized archaic manner characteristic of Cycladic coinage. The fruit is shown in frontal view with visible calyx segments radiating outward, serving as the principal type and civic emblem of Melos, whose name in Greek (melon) signifies apple. The field surrounding the device is broad and largely plain, with the irregular flan exhibiting typical characteristics of hand-struck hammered coinage of the fifth century BC. |

| Reverse description | Facing Gorgoneion (Gorgon mask) depicted in bold relief at center, occupying most of the flan. The apotropaic visage displays the characteristic features of the archaic Gorgo type: wide-open staring eyes, a broad flat nose, a wide gaping mouth with protruding tongue and prominent teeth, and flanking serpentine coils of hair or snakes curling outward to either side. The head is framed by a wreath or foliate crown at the top. The rendering is vigorous and expressive, executed in the late archaic to early classical style. |
