Leukas occupied a strategically awkward position — technically an island after the Corinthians cut a canal through the isthmus connecting it to the mainland in the late 7th century, yet culturally and politically tied to the Corinthian colonial network throughout its history. That Corinthian connection explains the Pegasos coinage entirely: the type was a Corinthian export, adopted by its colonies as a mark of commercial alignment rather than imitation. Leukadian staters circulated widely across the Adriatic trade routes the city depended on.
BCD Akarnania 203 places this piece within a tightly sequenced die study by the collector BCD, whose Akarnanian holdings remain the benchmark reference for the series.
