Obverse description Boeotian shield rendered in high relief at center, depicted in a front-facing orientation with characteristic cut-outs on either side forming the distinctive double-curved silhouette emblematic of Boeotian coinage. The shield boss projects prominently from the field, surrounded by the incised border of the shield rim, all set within a shallow circular incuse. The design is bold and stylized, executed with confident die-cutting typical of the Boeotian League mint of the early fourth century BC.

Additional information

This stater falls within the Corinthian War period, when Boeotia allied with Argos, Corinth, and Athens against Sparta — a remarkable reversal given Boeotia's collaboration with Persia during the Persian Wars less than a century earlier. The League's mint was active at Thebes throughout this conflict, producing silver coinage to fund military operations against a Spartan hegemony that would not fully collapse until Leuctra in 371 BC.

The Peace of Antalcidas in 387 BC dissolved the Boeotian League outright under Spartan pressure, making this among the final issues of the first League coinage sequence.
