The bird is perched on what appears to be a rocky base or low ground line rather than a classical Ionic column, with head turned slightly upward in an alert posture. The ethnic abbreviation F-A (digamma-alpha, for FALEIOI or the Elean magistrate's initial) flanks the eagle to left and right respectively in the field, inscribed in archaic Greek characters. The composition is bold and well-centered, consistent with the prestigious sanctuary coinage struck at Olympia under Elean authority. |
