| Beschrijving voorzijde | Square flan struck by hammered technique, bearing a two-line Arabic religious legend boldly rendered in Maghribi Kufic script across the field. The inscription reads 'la quwwata illa billah' (There is no strength except through God), disposed in two horizontal registers. The lettering is deeply struck in raised relief with pronounced curvilinear flourishes characteristic of Almohad calligraphic style. The field is flat and undecorated, with a plain border following the irregular square outline of the flan. Surface shows natural silver patina with areas of granularity consistent with hammered production. |

The square half-dirham is the denomination that most sharply distinguishes Almohad coinage from everything that preceded it in the Islamic West. The square flan was a deliberate ideological break — the Almohad movement under Ibn Tumart had rejected the Almoravid regime as theologically corrupt, and the new coin format made that rupture visible in daily commerce across Morocco and al-Andalus.
Abu Ya'qub Yusuf I inherited both the caliphate and its ongoing Iberian campaigns, dying at the siege of Santarém in 1184.
