| 表面の説明 | Pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Valentinian II facing right, portrayed as a youthful emperor. The elaborate pearl diadem adorns his head with prominent rosette ornaments, and the paludamentum is fastened at the shoulder. The effigy displays fine late Roman workmanship with carefully rendered hair and facial features. The surrounding legend is inscribed in Latin capital letters, divided by the bust, with a beaded border encircling the entire field. |

Valentinian II was eleven years old when he became co-emperor in 375, elevated by the western army following his father Valentinian I's fatal stroke during negotiations with the Quadi. The years 378–383 place this solidus squarely in the shadow of Adrianople — the catastrophic Gothic victory in August 378 that killed Theodosius's predecessor Valens and shattered Roman field strength in the east. Gratian, Valentinian II's older half-brother, effectively governed the west while the boy emperor held nominal authority.
The CONCORDIA AVGGG reverse type — harmony of three Augusti — refers to the collegiate rule of Gratian, Valentinian II, and Theodosius I, the latter elevated in January 379 to stabilize the Balkans.
