Obverse description Facing left bust of Emperor Valens in consular regalia, pearl-diademed and draped in the imperial trabea (consular mantle), the emperor rendered in the hieratic Late Antique style. The effigy is depicted holding a mappa in the right hand and a sceptre in the left. The obverse legend D N VALENS P F AVG (Dominus Noster Valens Pius Felix Augustus) runs in the field surrounding the portrait.

Reverse description Two nimbate emperors — Valentinian I and Valens — seated facing on a shared throne, each clad in imperial robes and holding a mappa in the right hand and a sceptre in the left, symbolising joint imperial authority. A captive is depicted kneeling or prostrate at either side of the throne. The reverse legend VOTA PVBLICA is arranged across the field in three segments, while the mintmark CONS surmounted by a wreath appears in the exergue, denoting the Constantinople mint.
