The IMP•XXXXII•COS• reverse type dates this solidus to the later years of Theodosius II's reign, a period defined less by military triumph than by the catastrophic pressure of Attila's Hunnic invasions. Between 441 and 450, the Eastern court paid enormous tribute to maintain an uneasy peace — at its peak, 2,100 pounds of gold annually under the Treaty of Anatolius in 443. Solidi of this type were the very currency in which that humiliation was denominated.
