Obverse description Frontal bust of Emperor Theodosius II, facing slightly to the right, pearl-diademed, helmeted, and cuirassed in the imperial military fashion. The emperor holds a spear diagonally over his right shoulder and bears a large round shield on his left arm, the shield decorated with a horseman motif rendered in the late antique style. The bust is executed in the characteristic rigid, hieratic manner of fifth-century Byzantine coinage, conveying imperial authority and divine sanction. The legend encircles the bust, identifying the emperor with his full imperial titulature.
