| Obverse description | Helmeted and cuirassed frontal bust of Emperor Theodosius II, facing the viewer in three-quarter view, the helmet adorned in imperial military style. The emperor raises a spear over his right shoulder with his right hand, while his left shoulder bears a large round shield decorated in relief with a mounted horseman trampling a fallen enemy, a compositional motif emphasizing military dominance. The bust is rendered in the rigid, hieratic style characteristic of early fifth-century Byzantine imperial coinage. The obverse legend runs in two segments separated by the bust, enclosed within a beaded border. |
