| Obverse description | Right-facing diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Emperor Petronius Maximus, the diadem adorned with pendilia. The emperor is depicted in three-quarter view, wearing imperial armour with elaborate shoulder fittings, and holding what appears to be a mappa and a sceptre or spear. The legend D N PETRONIVS MAXIMVS P F AVG runs clockwise around the periphery in Latin capitals, typical of late Western Roman solidus coinage. The portrait displays the stylized, elongated facial features characteristic of mid-fifth century Roman imperial die work. |
