Obverse description Laureate, draped bust of Emperor Louis I (the Pious) facing right, rendered in a late antique imperial style characteristic of early Carolingian coinage. The emperor is depicted in half-length, wearing a laurel wreath and imperial drapery, with the portrait displaying a broad, somewhat stylized treatment typical of hammered Carolingian gold issues. The circular legend surrounds the effigy in the field, reading DN HLVDOVVICVS IMP AVG.

Obverse lettering DN HLVDOVVICVS IMP ΛVC
(Translation: Our lord Louis august emperor...)
Reverse description A plain cross centered within a laurel wreath, the wreath rendered as a circular beaded or knotted band enclosing the cross motif. The cross, with equal-length arms, is set in the inner field, symbolizing Christian imperial authority. The surrounding legend MVNVS DIVINVM fills the outer field between the wreath and the coin's irregular edge, the lettering somewhat irregularly spaced owing to the hammered fabric of the flan.
