Leo I came to power in 457 as the first emperor elevated through the direct influence of the Alan generalissimo Aspar, a dependence he spent nearly two decades carefully dismantling. The years 462–466 fall squarely within that uneasy arrangement, during which Leo was quietly cultivating the Isaurian military faction that would eventually murder Aspar in 471. Coins struck under this political tightrope carry no trace of the tension — the mint at Constantinople operated with bureaucratic regularity throughout.
RIC X 605 is among the more frequently documented solidi of Leo's reign, though the series presents documented obverse die variations worth examining closely before attribution is finalized.
