The figure is rendered in a hieratic, stylized manner derived from late Byzantine imperial prototypes. A circular Arabic legend encircling the effigy within the border contains the shahada, the Islamic profession of faith. The overall composition closely follows the iconographic tradition of the Byzantine 'standing emperor' solidus, here adapted to Umayyad religious and political ideology. |
