Additional information

Constantius III reigned as co-emperor for only seven months in 421 before dying — possibly of pleurisy — before Honorius, his reluctant co-ruler, could be rid of him by other means. The Eastern court under Theodosius II had refused to recognize Constantius as Augustus at all, a diplomatic rupture that left the Western regime in an awkward posture for the duration of his short reign. Ravenna had been the Western imperial seat since 402, and the solidus struck there under Constantius reflects a mint working under continuous political pressure rather than stable dynastic authority.
