Avitus reigned for barely fourteen months, elevated by the Visigothic king Theoderic II in July 455 following the murder of Petronius Maximus — himself emperor for only eleven weeks. The Milan mint, still functional under increasingly precarious imperial control, produced this solidus during that narrow window before the Gallic aristocrat-emperor was deposed by Ricimer in October 456, stripped of his rank, and compelled into a bishopric he would not survive.
The extreme brevity of the reign keeps total output from Mediolanum genuinely low.
