Anthemius was the last Western emperor with any realistic prospect of reversing the empire's fragmentation. His reign was defined by a catastrophic joint campaign with the Eastern emperor Leo I against the Vandals in 468 — a naval disaster off Cape Bon that destroyed perhaps the largest fleet Rome had ever assembled and drained both treasuries beyond recovery. The Milan mint, already operating under severe logistical pressure as Visigothic power consolidated across Gaul and Spain, struck this solidus during those final years when the Western court still maintained the fiction of Mediterranean authority.
Anthemius was killed in 472 by his own son-in-law, Ricimer, after a siege of Rome itself.
