| Obverse description | Central field displays a crowned quartered royal shield of France and Dauphine, the arms divided into quarters bearing the fleurs-de-lis of France and the dolphin of Dauphine, surmounted by an open royal crown. The shield is rendered in a bold, somewhat crude hammered style typical of mid-sixteenth-century provincial French coinage. A circular Latin legend runs along the entire periphery, separated from the central device by a beaded inner border. The coin exhibits the irregular flan characteristic of hand-struck production. |
