Obverse description Central field displays a crowned quartered royal shield of France and Dauphine, the arms divided into quarters bearing the fleurs-de-lis of France and the dolphin of Dauphine, surmounted by an open royal crown. The shield is rendered in a bold, somewhat crude hammered style typical of mid-sixteenth-century provincial French coinage. A circular Latin legend runs along the entire periphery, separated from the central device by a beaded inner border. The coin exhibits the irregular flan characteristic of hand-struck production.

Reverse description Central field features a large ornate cross fleury, with each arm terminating in a fleur-de-lis motif, and four crescents placed in the angles between the arms of the cross, a distinctive decorative arrangement associated with the Dauphine issues of Charles IX. The design is boldly struck in a vigorous hammered style. A circular Latin legend encircles the device along the periphery, incorporating the date 1566 and the mint letter Z for Grenoble, separated by pellet stops. A beaded inner border frames the legend.
