Verica ruled the Atrebates in the decades immediately preceding the Claudian invasion of 43 AD, and his repeated appeals to Rome for military support against Catuvellauni expansion under Cunobelinus are cited by Cassius Dio as among the pretexts for that invasion. Whether those appeals were genuine desperation or calculated diplomacy remains debated. His silver coinage reflects a kingdom under sustained political pressure, producing lightweight fractional units toward the end of a reign that ended in exile.
The cross-boss type is catalogued in the BMC Iron Age series at 1356–7, a tight grouping suggesting limited output from a single or closely related die pairing.
