Obverse description Plain field bearing the Latin inscription VER in bold, raised characters at centre, referencing the mint of Verlamion (modern St Albans). The legend is surrounded by an arc of pellets arranged in a crescent formation above and to the sides of the lettering, a decorative device characteristic of Late Iron Age Celtic coinage. The flan is irregular and slightly scalloped at the edge, consistent with hand-hammered production. The textured, striated background field is typical of the Catuvellaunian engraving tradition of the late 1st century BC.
