The Sussex Helmet type emerged from the tribal territory straddling the South Downs during a period of acute political pressure following Caesar's two expeditions to Britain in 55 and 54 BC. Whether the distinctive helmet motif reflects direct exposure to Roman military equipment or a deliberate tribal assertion in response to Roman contact remains debated among Celtic numismatists. ABC 674 is tightly concentrated geographically — findspot distribution clusters around the Chichester basin, the later site of Noviomagus Reginorum, suggesting a localized issuing authority rather than broad inter-tribal circulation.
