Additional information

The Iceni occupied what is now Norfolk and Suffolk, and remained nominally client-allied to Rome in the years immediately following the Claudian invasion of 43 AD — the precise window this coin occupies. That arrangement collapsed catastrophically in 60 or 61 AD with Boudica's revolt, making coins struck in this short interval of uneasy accommodation historically distinct from both pre-conquest and post-revolt issues. The 'Ale Scavo' inscription remains incompletely understood; it may reference a ruler or magistrate otherwise unattested in the written record.
