Cunobelin ruled from Camulodunum — modern Colchester — for roughly four decades, making him the longest-reigning Iron Age king in British numismatic record. Shakespeare later borrowed his name for Cymbeline, though the dramatized version bears little resemblance to the man who consolidated Catuvellaunian dominance across much of southeast Britain. Roman sources, including Suetonius, describe his death as the proximate trigger for Claudius's invasion of 43 AD; his sons Caratacus and Togodumnus refused to maintain their father's accommodating posture toward Rome.
Production ceased abruptly with the Claudian conquest. Surviving examples were buried or lost within years of striking.
