The Atrebates occupied a territory straddling what is now the Hampshire-Berkshire border, and their coinage tradition developed partly through contact with Gaulish tribes using imported Gallo-Belgic prototypes. This "Berkshire" type belongs to a regional sub-series distinguished by the orientation of the horse — a detail that, to modern eyes, seems trivial but likely carried tribal or workshop significance in the first century BC.
Caesar's two expeditions to Britain in 55 and 54 BC disrupted existing tribal power structures across the southeast, accelerating both the political fragmentation of the Atrebates and, paradoxically, the diversification of their coinage output.
