Surmounting the horse, a charioteer figure grasps a staff or whip, a vestigial reference to the biga chariot scene inherited from earlier Greek prototypes. Beneath the horse, a prominent wheel motif with clearly articulated spokes occupies the lower field, serving as the principal emblem of this issue. The composition is executed in the characteristic abstract Celtic style, with subsidiary pellets and geometric fillers distributed throughout the field. The overall design exemplifies the progressive stylization of Hellenistic prototypes as adapted by Armorican Veneti die-cutters. |

The Veneti of Armorica were the dominant maritime power on the Atlantic coast of Gaul before Caesar's fleet destroyed them at the Battle of Morbihan in 56 BC — after which the tribe effectively ceased to exist as an independent political entity. Their coinage, struck in the decade or so preceding that defeat, is among the few material traces of a culture Caesar himself described at length in the Gallic Wars. This stater belongs to that narrow window of production.
